Caroline Schultz's art work includes African animals, as well as a few other exotic animals, not from Africa. These are hand-pulled lithographs produced in the 1970's on the finest paper. Most are available signed or unsigned. Also available are five original oil paintings from the Schultz family collection.
Caroline Schultz began her 30 year art career in Evansville Indiana, USA, sketching animals at the local zoo. From there she moved to San Diego where she became a fixture at the world famous San Diego Zoo. Here, Schultz was the first to be honored with a one-woman art show. She would eventually serve as the US Art Director for the East African Wildlife Society, along with then head San Diego Zoo veterinarian, Charles Sedgewick.
Schultz set out on her first trip to Africa in 1972, desperately wanting to capture animals in their natural habitat, roaming free. She would eventually travel to Africa over 20 times in her life. It was here she developed her unique 'drip style' that would set her apart in the art world. This style also included mute colored, fading animals in the background, as her statement on conservationism.
From 1976 to 1979 Schultz was honored with exhibitions at the famous Mount Kenya Safari Club, owned by William Holden. Schultz said "It was often the big game hunter's that eventually became the biggest proponents of conservationism." From 1975 to 1976 Schultz art was exhibited at the East Wildlife Society Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya.
Schultz would eventually become so familiar with the environment of Africa that she went on to lecture groups on topics such as 'African Anatomy' and 'Africa in the Eyes of an Artist'. She also went on to write the poem 'Ghost of Yesteryear'. Composed in 1990, it reflects on the spiritual wonder she found in Africa. This poem accompanied a one-woman exhibition in Nairobi, Kenya. Schultz was also honored with a Humanitarian award for directly helping the Pygmies of the Iruri Forest (Belgian Congo) to preserve their home-forest, their culture and their right to live with dignity.
Schultz studied at the Los Angeles Art center of Design, the University of Illinois and the University of the Arts in Parma Italy. Caroline Schultz art is the private collections of such notables as Jack Lemmon and William Holden.
