Caroline Schultz returns to North America for this delightful composition of bighorn sheep.
Bighorn sheep are named for the large, curved horns carried by the rams. Female sheep also have horns but they are short with a slight curve. Bighorn sheep range in colour from light brown to grey or dark brown, with a white rump and white on the back of the legs.
It is before and during the rut that the big horns come into play as the rams try to establish dominance that determines access to ewes for mating. This time is the peak for the characteristic horn clashing which occurs between rams. The horns can often become damaged from repeated clashes.
