Caroline Schultz Peacock Art

A peacock is actually the term used for a male peafowl. The female is known as a peahen. These birds are best known for the peacock's irridescent green-blue colours and the extravagant tail, which it displays as part of courtship. The peahen is a brown/grey colour and quite drab compared to the peacock.

There are 2 species - the Indian Peafowl from India and the Green Peafowl found from Burma to Java.

The tail of the peacock is also known as the 'train'. It is not the tail quill feathers but highly elongated upper tail coverts. The train feathers have a series of 'eyes' that are best seen when the tail is fanned.

Both the peacock and peahen have a crest on top the head, beautifully shown in Caroline Schultz's vibrant peacock portrait.

Caroline Schultz's 'Peacock' was used to illustrate a month in the San Diego Zoo's yearly calendar.
