All the paintings in the Hippo Watercolor Gallery are original, signed and dated by Enrique Lacuesta.
Hippos are usually a slate brown, muddy brown or a purplish colour. They have thick, hairless skin that easily gets sunburned and dried out if they spend much time out of water. They also exude acidic red or orange pigments which stop the growth of disease-causing bacteria and act as a sunscreen. To prevent their skin cracking they also secrete a dark pink protective fluid which acts as a shiny 'skin conditioner'.
